Oboist of the month: Lucas Macías Navarro
OBOIST OF THE MONTH:
Lucas Macías Navarro made his directorial debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 2014 after an exceptional career as one of the leading oboists in the world. He has been the main oboe of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Lucerne Festival Orchestra and founding member of the Mozart Orchestra, acquiring, together with Claudio Abbado, a deep knowledge and understanding of both the chamber music and the symphonic repertoire.
He is currently facing his second season as assistant director of the Orchester of Paris working closely with Daniel Harding.
Lucas studied direction at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Mark Stringer. He has performed concerts with the Symphonic Orchestra of the Swedish Radio, the Orchester of Paris, the Orchester Chambre de Lausanne, Orchester Chambre de Genève, the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia and the Camerata of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
In the 2017/18 season he has directed the Orchester de Paris, the Symphonic Orchestra of the Swedish Radio and concerts with the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra, Oviedo Filarmonía, Orquesta de Extremadura and Sinfonietta de Lausanne. The season ends with a concert at the Espinho Festival (Portugal) with the Orchestra of Castilla y León, and directing the Youth Orchestra of Andalucia on tour.
In the 2018/19 season he will be in charge of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires, on a tour of Argentina. He will return to the season of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Vallés and the Orchestra of Castilla y León directing the flute player Emmanuel Pahud. He will make his debut at the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, Orchester de Cannes, Het Gelders Orkest in the Netherlands, and at the head of the Camerata RCO (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra) in Russia and the Netherlands.
Lucas Macías Navarro began his musical studies at the age of nine and was later accepted into the oboe class of Heinz Holliger at the University of Freiburg, Germany. He continued his training at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, and in Geneva with Maurice Bourgue. He won several competitions, including the Tokyo Oboe International Competition of the Sony Music Foundation in 2006, and he participated in a large number of recordings with Maestro Abbado for Deutsche Grammophon, Claves Music and EuroArts.
