5 recommended books to become a reedmaking professional.

Since we know that the summer can be long we have decided to make a selection with some recommendations of oboe books that we hope you love. As always if you want us to add some, you just have to say it!

  • Oboe, a reed blown in the wind by Marion Whittow: It is a book very different to others that narrates various aspects of oboe and reedmaking in a very fun way. Features clever illustrations to make it more bearable. A book that cannot be missing on the shelf of an oboist.

  • Practical manual. Oboe Reed Crafting by Antonio Suárez: The oboe reed, unlike most woodwind instruments, is as important an element to the instrument as it is personal to the instrumentalist. The reed must conform at all times to the mouthpiece and technique of each oboist. It is very important that each oboist knows how to make his own tabs or, at least, that he knows how to touch them up when necessary. This manual is intended as an illustrated guide to help us understand a little more about the process of making oboe reeds, first of all in a practical way.

Understanding the Oboe Reed by Graham Salter: This book is a fairly new text that covers topics as varied as Breath Support, Vibrato, and refinements in reed making in the world’s major styles. It also explores the options of Reed, Knife and each material for refining and scraping the reed.

  • Oboe reed making. A modern method by Peter Hedrick: a classic that although it proposed a modern method for the time has already become somewhat obsolete. However, we recommend it to discover the history and how the reedmaking process has advanced.

  • Oboe Reed Styles: Theory and Practice by Davida A. Ledet: For nearly 300 years, oboists have painstakingly developed the individualized ability to make reeds. This unique study by David A. Ledet offers techniques for designing oboe reeds and analyzes, in detail, 166 examples of reeds by 80 artists from 14 countries. Each reed is remarkably photographed both in reflected light and in silhouette, clearly illustrating the relative thickness and shape of the various sections of the reed. It also narrates the reflections of the oboists on their reedmaking techniques.
