Guide to choosing an oboe reed, especial for students.
The course begins and if there is something key for oboe lessons and rehearsals, that is what reeds we are going to use. Depending on the course it is advisable to opt for one or another model that will depend on the hardness, the material and other aspects.
In Medina Reeds we have created this small guide for oboe students so that you know which oboe reed is best for you according to your experience and course. In addition, our teacher and oboist Miguel Angel Medina is available to answer any questions you may have, so don’t forget to write us if you need to!
Choosing an oboe reed for students:
The best oboe reeds for student:
If you are a beginner oboist and you are studying first or second course: we recommend the Beginner Oboe Reed: MAMMUT (From Medina Reeds).
This is an oboe reed made of Medina Reeds Selection material and mounted on a Chiarugi 47.2 tudel. These reeds are made of professional wood, with the same gouging as the professional ones, but softer and with more vibration, so that the student’s playing is more comfortable and appealing. Very good intonation and a very nice sound color. European scraping.
In the drop-down menu you can select the one you need: first or second year ;), although our recommendation is that already in the second year, you switch to the student reeds.
If you are an elementary oboist, from first to fourth year: we recommend the Oboe Beginner reed: MAMMUT (De Medina Reeds).
It is an oboe reed made with Medina Reeds Selection material and mounted on a Chiarugi 47.2 tudel. These reeds are made with professional wood, with the same gouging as the professional ones, but softer and with more vibration, so that the student’s playing is more comfortable and appealing. Very good intonation and a very nice sound color. European scraping. The main difference with the oboe reeds for beginners is that the sound quality, which is somewhat related to the hardness of the material, is more controlled. In the reeds for beginners, under my experience of many years as a teacher, the most important thing for the student is the ease in producing the sound, while when they are advancing in courses, they look for other qualities in the reed.
In the drop down menu you can select the one you need from first to fourth course 😉 you can also choose the hardness between intermediate or soft. Our recommendation is that already in the fourth course, you go thinking about making the leap to the semi-professional reeds.

If you are a semi-professional oboist, from fourth to sixth grade (which would be from 4th year of Basic or elementary to 2nd year of Intermediate Grade): we recommend the Semi-professional Oboe reed: Medina Reeds.
This oboe reed is made of Medina Reeds Selection material and mounted on a Chiarugi 47.2 tudel. These reeds are made with professional wood, same gouge as the professional ones, but with less hardness, so that the student’s playing is more comfortable and more enjoyable. Very good intonation and a very nice sound color. European scraping. This model, has as utility, to develop to the student his capacities, for the passage to his future professional reed.
You can choose from the drop-down menu:
– Grade: fourth through sixth
– Hardness: intermediate or soft
– Tudel: basic or chiarugi 47 2

If you are already a professional oboist or you have passed the 2nd year of Middle Grade (6th year), contact us or visit our section of professional oboe reeds. You will find yours, for sure! Miguel Angel Medina will personally help you.
