How to learn to play the oboe.

The oboe is a fascinating musical instrument, many musicians choose this instrument for its distinguished sound and once you start playing the oboe, you can’t stop. It is hypnotic, an almost magical feeling.

Are you interested in learning to play this instrument? Do you want to learn to play the oboe? I’m Miguel Angel Medina founder of Medina Reeds and I’m here to help you with a short and simple guide to start your journey in the world of the oboe and develop your skills as a musician.

Step 1: Get to know the Oboe

Before you start playing, familiarize yourself with the oboe and its structure. The oboe is a woodwind instrument that consists of several parts: the oboe reed and the three bodies that form it, composed of wood and keys. Learn how to assemble and disassemble it correctly to take proper care of it.

Need help choosing your oboe? Don’t worry, contact me and I will discuss the options with you. I will be happy to advise you.

Step 2: Find a Teacher or join a music school

The oboe is a somewhat complicated instrument, certainly a challenging one, and having an experienced teacher will help you progress more efficiently and correct mistakes before they become bad habits. Look for a qualified oboist who can provide you with a solid foundation in breathing, embouchure and fingering techniques.

Step 3: Practice Breathing and Embouchure

Proper breathing is essential to playing any wind instrument. Practice breathing exercises to develop solid lung capacity and steady airflow control. Work on your embouchure for a clear, resonant oboe sound.

Step 4: Fingerings Exercises

Mastering fingering is key to playing the oboe correctly. Practice scales and arpeggios to improve the agility and precision of your fingers. Spend time every day on these exercises to strengthen your technical skills.

Step 5: Score Reading

Learn to read musical scores, solfège. This is essential for playing musical pieces on the oboe. Familiarize yourself with musical notation, clefs and rhythms. Start with simple pieces and gradually increase the difficulty as you become more comfortable.

Step 6: Develop Your Musical Ear

The oboe is a melodic instrument, and developing your musical ear will help you in tuning notes correctly and playing more expressively. Listen to oboe music and other instruments to improve your auditory perception.

Step 7: Practice regularly

Regular practice is essential to improve in any musical skill. Establish a daily practice routine and be consistent in your approach. Although you may face challenges at first, persevere, establish a discipline and don’t get discouraged.

Step 8: Explore different musical styles

The oboe is a versatile instrument used in a variety of musical styles, from classical music to jazz to soundtracks. Explore different genres to broaden your musical horizons and adapt to different forms of performance.

Step 9: Join musical groups

Once you have acquired some proficiency on the oboe, consider joining musical groups, such as a band, orchestra or chamber music ensemble. Playing with more musicians will allow you to improve your ensemble playing skills and enjoy the shared musical experience.

Step 10: Enjoy the Process

Learning to play the oboe is an exciting and rewarding journey. Enjoy every step of the way and celebrate your accomplishments, big and small. Patience and dedication will lead you to become a skilled musician.

Why is the sound of the oboe so pleasing?

Why is the sound of the oboe so popular? We answer this question.

The oboe is one of the most beautiful and versatile instruments in the orchestra. Its sound is distinctive, with auditory warmth, in addition, penetrating sound, which is able to carry the melody and be an important element in the orchestral texture. From Medina Reeds we tell you the characteristics of the oboe sound, its history and how it is produced.

The oboe is a woodwind instrument that has been used for centuries in classical music. It is one of the highest pitched members of the woodwind family, which means that it has one of the highest tessituras (than, for example, the bassoon). In addition, its timbre is very characteristic thanks to its “double reed”, which gives it its distinctive sound and its ability to project over the orchestra.

The double reed of the oboe is made from an Arundo Donax tube, which as assembled, consists of two pieces tied to a tudel, and which produces the sound by vibrating when the oboist blows through it. The double reed is very sensitive to humidity and weather, so oboists (I’m sure you already know this) have to spend time preparing their reeds to obtain the desired sound.

Why is the sound of the oboe so pleasing?

The sound of the oboe is characterized by being bright, penetrating and warm. It is capable of sounding both soft and loud, and has a unique capacity for expression in the orchestra. Oboists often say that their sound, like the human voice, can express a wide range of emotions with their instrument.

The oboe has been a key instrument in classical music for centuries. It was used by composers such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, and remains an important element in contemporary classical music. In addition, it is also used in other musical genres, such as jazz and folk music.

In the orchestra, both the oboe and the English horn often have a prominent role in the main melody. For example, in Dvořák’s famous New World Symphony, the English horn initiates the main melody in the second movement. In addition, the oboe is often used as a solo instrument, in works such as Mozart’s Oboe Concerto or Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto among numerous others.

In conclusion, the sound of the oboe is an important part of the orchestra and of classical music in general. Its distinctive sound and expressive ability make it a key instrument in many works, and its history goes back centuries. If you have the opportunity to hear an oboe live, do it! It will give you a chance to appreciate its sound.

Tips to improve as an oboist.

In this blog article we are going to give you several tips to improve as an oboist and become a better musician in less time. You can follow all the tips or just some of them, you decide 😉

Tips to improve as an oboist:

  • Practice the different techniques:

Playing the instrument is not necessarily the same as practicing. When professional oboists practice with the oboe: scales, reed exercises, long notes… They work hard to improve their technique.

We recommend that you establish a practice or warm-up regimen or schedule, not for playing but for practicing. Remember that you should not only practice scales and exercises to maintain your skills, you should also challenge yourself to master all the new things you learn.

  • To be patient:

This is one of the most important qualities in an oboist, especially if you are just starting out. No one masters the oboe overnight, you will encounter many obstacles and difficulties, but it is a matter of time, patience and effort to become a good oboist.

Tip: Don’t take out your frustrations on the oboe or reeds. Keep calm and keep practicing.

  • Set goals:

In any profession it is essential to set realistic goals and strive to achieve them. They can be short term goals, such as practicing 1 hour every day or learning a new piece. Or they can be more comprehensive long-term goals such as mastering the process of making oboe reeds or reedmaking.

  • Have fun:

Although it is important to work on scales and other (sometimes more boring) techniques, don’t forget to enjoy yourself. A good idea is to learn and practice your favorite pieces or try new things. The worst thing for an oboist is for playing to become a chore and not an enjoyable experience.

  • Play the oboe with other people or practice with other oboists:

Whether you want to form a new ensemble, or just want to enjoy a music session with your friends, playing in a group can help you improve your technique as well as perfect your timing and improvisational skills.

Playing with others can expose you to new ideas and methods, and it’s a great way to get honest feedback on your playing.

  • Find a teacher or a tutor:

Going to lessons is one of the most effective ways to become a better oboist, whatever your level. There is always something new to learn, and a professional tutor or teacher can help you develop new techniques and improve old ones.

If you’re financially strapped for cash, you can always opt for a more self-taught method, like learning from one of the thousands of YouTube videos out there on the oboe. One channel we love is MusicBaySide.

  • Search for resources on the Internet:

As said before, there are plenty of free resources for oboists who want to improve their skills and learn new pieces. You can also count on the advice or consultations of professionals from oboe stores as is our case. In Medina Reeds we are ready to help you in whatever you need.

  • Getting out of the comfort zone:

It is often tempting to stick with what we already know, but as an oboist, you should try to get out of your comfort zone as often as possible, discover new ways of playing and constantly challenge yourself. Yes, it can be frustrating, and yes, it will be hard work, but the reward of mastering something new is the best.
